Google puts pride on the Pixel’s camera. The company’s VP of Product Management Brian Rakowski described it as the “best smartphone” camera. This is based on the overall DxOMark score it received at 89. It beat both the latest phones from Apple and Samsung. However, this may be a bit of an overreach.

According to Trusted Reviews, the 1080p display may pose a problem for the VR ready phone. However, it actually looks better than the given figure. This may be caused by the AMOLED display. Though it still doesn’t come as close as that of iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy 7.

DxO Mark says that Pixel’s 12.3M rear camera can record 4K video at 30fps and 1080p video at up to 120fps. The video stabilization is also another feature in the Pixel phone. It is able to capture a stable video even though the user is in motion. It does have a fast f/2.0 lens.

The Pixel also has an HDR+ in its camera. It should allow a decent quality in low-light settings.

Google will offer an unlimited storage for photos and videos at full resolution. This will make up for the obviously absent microSD.

Google Assistant

The Pixel phone is built-in with another Google highlight in the event, the Google Assistant. It is part of the tech company’s goal in achieving artificial intelligence. It is akin to Apple’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana. The Google Assistant is designed for machine translation and image recognition.

According to Tech Radar, it actually very impressive. The user simply has to activate it by saying the usual “Okay Google” or long pressing the home button. It provides quality service from complicated commands. Google mentioned that the Google Assistant will also be integrated to Google Home. So, it can really be useful.

Android 7.1 Nougat

The Google Pixel runs on Android 7.1 Nougat. The interface actually looks reasonable. The traditional app drawer is now replaced with an app dock at the bottom of the screen. You need to slide it up to access the apps.

The Tech Radar also noticed how the icons for the applications have become different. It’s already round rather than square. Though users will get used to these changes. At least, the latest Android runs well on the Pixel phone.

Battery Life

Google said that the Pixel battery will give you about seven hours of use. This is for a 15-minute charge. So, that’s actually really fast for the smartphone.

Apparently, this is due to the USB-C port on the bottom of the Pixel. Though Trusted Reviews pointed out that the 2,770mAh battery may be a bit small.

Verdict

You will enjoy the innovative features of the Pixel phone. The camera and video stabilization can be loved by those who love taking pictures and videos. Nexus users may be encouraged to buy the new Pixel phone for the Google Assistant. It is powerful enough compared to its predecessors. The Google Pixel is a promising device.

However, the price seems to be an issue. The entry-level Pixel phone costs at least $649. Is it as good as the price? You might want to settle with another brand. Or wait for an in-depth review of Pixel’s specs and features.
